Savage Fen Wetland ComplexAccording to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Savage Fen Wetland Complex contains one of Minnesota's largest known calcareous fens. The Complex encompasses more than 440 acres in the northern half of the Savage community, 62 of which are calcareous fen.

Calcareous fens form where the discharges of calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate-rich groundwater occur. These conditions result in the creation of thick peat base that supports unique plant life. Scientists have found more than 200 different plant species in the Savage Fen, ranging from orchids and gentians to sedges and grasses.

Recognizing the environmental asset the fen is to the community, the City of Savage has conducted several studies and enacted numerous policies to ensure its protection.
