Those interested in volunteering for the following community service opportunities are asked to please complete a Community Service Project Application.

PARKS AND NATURAL RESOURCES

Many opportunities relating to the City's parks and natural resources:

• Neighborhood tree planting – Help bring trees back where streets and utilities were reconstructed. This project will help beautify neighborhoods and restore greenery. Make-over to take place May through June.
• Adopt-A-Park – Protect and enhance Savage's parks, trails and open spaces by providing general care and maintenance.
• Spring and fall park cleanup – Assist with the freshening up of City parks by providing general care, painting, playground improvements, and tree/shrub trimming.
• Adopt-A-Garden – Prepare, plant, weed and water one of the many community flower beds at city parks and public buildings.

MCCOLL POND ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING CENTER

There are a many volunteer opportunities available at the McColl Pond Environmental Learning Center.

SAVAGE CABLE TELEVISION

Assistance is sought with the television production of various community events in Savage such as Dan Patch Days, WinterFest and Arbor Day.

VOLUNTEERS IN POLICING SERVICES

Savage residents who wish to serve their communities and experience the inner workings of a police department can join the Savage Volunteers in Policing Services (VIPS) program. Qualified volunteers will be assigned specific tasks and duties that can create efficiencies for the Savage Police Department which will help improve services to the community. The VIPS program has been designed to be a fun learning experience for both volunteers and staff.

Please note, the Community Service Application is not required for this volunteer opportunity as the Police Department has a different form for volunteers to complete.

SAVAGE ARTS COUNCIL

Volunteer Positions: Event Helpers, Committee Members, Board Members

Based on your schedule, you can chip in a few hours during a single event, be a resource for a particular skill you have, participate on a program committee, and/or attend monthly board meetings.

FRIENDS OF MCCOLL POND

Volunteer Positions: Event Helpers and Committee Members

The Friends of McColl Pond was formed to promote public awareness and appreciation of the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) at McColl Pond, through the creation of environmental, educational, and interpretive programs that benefit citizens of all ages and abilities. New members and volunteers are always welcome.

ADVISORY COMMISSIONS

The City has four advisory commissions that review proposals and make recommendations to the Savage City Council. Time commitments vary. A selection process occurs every January.

Scout Service Project Application

The City of Savage annually works with Eagle Scout candidates on projects necessary to achieve the most prestigious rank for a Scout. Past projects have included the following:

• Butterfly garden at Savage Community Park
• Chimney swift tower at Savage Community Park
• Historical farm marker at McCann Park
• History kiosk in downtown Savage

The City has many divisions that could benefit from an Eagle Scout volunteer project. Staff also may be able to suggest projects that could meet the project criteria. Ideas include:

• Resurfacing wood-chip trails
• Painting projects
• Community clean up projects (stream bank restorations, etc.)

APPLICATION PROCESS

Scout Service Project Application

Scout who wish to work with the City on their project are asked to complete a Scout Service Project Application. Staff will review the project idea and contact the Scout with any questions. The project idea will be presented to the Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission for feedback/consideration. Once approved, the Scout will work with staff to complete the project, keeping staff informed of the project's progress.

PROJECT TIMELINE

• Allow a minimum of 2-6 months to complete the process.
• The City will not rush its process to meet an approaching 18th birthday (deadline for Scouts to complete project).
• Frequent contact with staff is required.
