The City of Savage announced today that the McColl Pond Environmental Learning Center has been awarded the LEED® Gold Level of certification established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
The McColl Pond ELC achieved LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use, as well as a variety of other sustainable strategies. By using less energy and water, LEED-certified buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the community.
“Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council. “The McColl Pond Environmental Learning Center project efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come.”
LEED Certification was based on a number of green design and construction features which include:
- Building design takes advantage of natural lighting
- Vegetated roof reduces heating and cooling expenses and manages storm water runoff
- Geothermal system reduces dependence on electricity and fossil fuels
- Low-flow faucets and waterless urinals help conserve water
- Sustainable wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council was used for wood studs, wall framing, wood trim and siding
- Recycled, environmentally friendly materials – like wall board made from wheat straw, cabinets made from sunflower seeds and countertops made from recycled plastics – were used wherever practical
Sheri Brezinka, executive director of the USGBC Minnesota Chapter, will officially present the LEED plaque to Mayor Janet Williams during the community’s annual Arbor Day Celebration. The presentation will occur at noon on Saturday, May 1 at the McColl Pond ELC.
