  • Sun rises near water towerEstimated population, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, is 26,911. Estimated number of occupied households is 9,116.

  • Median household income in 2009 was $104,160.

  • Savage is situated between two major transportation routes: State Highway 169 and Interstate 35W.

  • Savage is located in Scott County, ranked as the fastest growing county in the state, last decade, with a 45% increase in total population.

  • Three school districts primarily serve the residents of Savage: Prior Lake-Savage (District 719), Burnsville-Eagan-Savage (District 191), and Shakopee (District 720). A portion of Savage is in the Bloomington School District; however, no households are located within that area.

  • Residents receive City information via a monthly newsletter, the City News; Savage TV, which provides government, community and educational programming; a website, www.cityofsavage.com; Facebook page; Twitter; and InfoNet, a free email-based program provided by the Savage police department. The Savage Pacer is the local newspaper.

  • The community is home to the Ports of Savage, which is comprised of five facilities that deliver commodities to the rest of the world via the Minnesota River. Approximately 6 percent of the nation’s grain is shipped from the Ports of Savage.

  • The McColl Pond Environmental Learning Center (ELC), completed in the fall of 2008, provides opportunities for people of all ages to learn about and enjoy nature. The ELC is located in Community Park west of County Road 27 (Dakota Avenue).

  • The City operates two municipal liquor stores: Dan Patch Liquor and Marketplace Liquor. Profits help pay off the debt issued to build the Savage Public Library, offset the costs of special projects like the McColl Pond Environmental Learning Center, and support the general fund.

  • Savage is named after Marion W. Savage, a businessman who owned the famous racehorse, Dan Patch, during the early 1900s. Dan Patch lived in a stable on the banks of the Minnesota River from 1902 until his death on July 11, 1916. MW Savage died the day after.

  • Savage was incorporated in 1892 when it was known as Hamilton. The name of the post office there was changed to Savage in 1904. The city’s name officially changed to Savage in 1919.

  • The community has 23 parks. The parks and open space areas total over 440 acres of land. The City has 28 miles of paved trails and 58 miles of sidewalk throughout the community.

  • In 2005, Savage ranked 24th out of 112 Metro Area cities in terms of total property taxes. For 2008, City property taxes on a $258,200 home are approximately $1,249.

  • 2012 General Fund Budget is $12.26 million. This is an increase of $178,068 or 1.5% from the 2010 original budget.  The 2012 proposed final tax levy amount is $15.08 million.  This is approximately 3.1% under the 2011 approved levy.  The tax rate for 2012 is 51.082% due to an increase in the City's tax base.

  • Fire service is provided by 40 paid-on-call firefighters who are led by a full-time fire chief. A full-time deputy fire chief provides fire safety education and awareness to the community.  Average fire call response time is 5 minutes.

  • Cable television service is provided by Mediacom Cable and Integra Digital.

  • Recreational offerings include an outdoor aquatic center and full-scale health club through a partnership between the City and Life Time Fitness; a skate park; a sports dome scheduled to open fall 2012; and more than 50 activities and programs offered through the City's parks and recreation department year-round.

  • Community events occurring throughout the year include the Arbor Day Tree Sale and Celebration in April; City Hall Community Recycling Day in May; Dan Patch Days in June; Night to Unite in August; Fall Harvest Fest in September; the Fire Department’s Halloween party in October; and Winterfest in December.
